Coltan is found in commercial quantities in Central Africa, notably in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the Kivu region which holds between 60 and 80% of world reserves, as well as in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Spain, Orinoco region in Venezuela and China.
Coltan is an important source for the production of tantalum and, more incidentally, niobium. Tantalum is highly prized for its high resistance to corrosion. Considered a strategic metal, it is mainly used in the manufacture of capacitors for electronic equipment but is also used in the composition of cobalt and nickel alloys in aeronautics and particularly for the manufacture of reactors. It is also used as a coating in heat exchangers and in alloys for cutting or turning tools.
Niobium has physicochemical properties very close to those of tantalum. This made the respective identification of the elements difficult at the beginning of the 19th century.
